Okay, I dropped out of high school. I’m 18 and I am working on getting my GED. I have already decided that after I receive my GED, I want to further my education to become an Ultrasound Tech. I don’t know how to go about doing so. Do I go to a community college first, or do I go to a school for ultrasound techs? Both? I need help, please. Anyone with experience would be most helpful.

Thank you very much,
Megan (:

As a sonographer for the past 12 years, I would first suggest go to your local hospital and ask to shadow a tech for a day. You will get to see the basic aspect of the job. Depending on the lab you may get to see everything or if in a rural setting the exams could be limited. I have been a traveling sonographer for several years and pretty much every hospital is different! The tech should be able to help you with the local sono programs as well. A lot of the larger hospitals have sono students in them and they would be a great help as well to speak with.
I went to school in Kansas and at the time I went I had to be an x-ray tech first then go on the sono school. However I do know there are sono schools only out there. One site you might check out is ARDMS. That is the national registry site. It has a lot of great info and even some practice exams. GOOD LUCK!

All you need to do is find a CAAHEP accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. This link lists them by state:

Most programs are 2 year Associate’s degrees offered at technical colleges. Once you find a program, contact the school and they’ll let you know what their specific requirements are. Good luck :)
