Seeking Direction asked:

With the current bad economic times I am leaning towards going into a more secure career field in Health Care. I am currently researching various schools, and salary. I am looking for a response from someone who is currently working as a Medical Sonographer (Ultrasound Tech).. How important is the name of the school I choose? Ie… a well known university vs..a smaller school..

the school you attend will determine which companies you be able to work at.Please note that no job is guaranteed. just this week 3000 people would lay-ed off at UTMB in Galveston, TX. But the should be able to find a job at another hospital.

In order to be a sonographer with your local hospital, you will need to get some training in it. There are a lot of accredited schools that offer it around the continent. To be an ultrasound technician is a fairly itense, but rewarding career to do.

The school is very important but in these hard times I am still having a hard time finding full time employment. Only doing per diem. Its a good salary depending where you live. Here in NYC a lot of hospitals are starting at 32+ an hour depending on the type of ultrasound.
To be honest there are not as many opportunities as nursing, or even X-ray tech. Make sure you go to an accredited school. If you don’t, you will have to wait a year before being eligible to take the registry exams. That would put you above a lot of people who go to those tv commercial schools. To be honest, If I could do it again I would have gone to nursing school, pays more with more opportunities and flexibility.
